How to Tell a Sweater Will Pill Before You Buy It

Quick Answer: Pilling is caused by short fibers working loose and tangling, so the two things that predict it are staple length and yarn twist. Long-staple, tightly twisted yarn barely pills; short-staple, loosely twisted yarn pills within a few wears regardless of fiber or price. Short fibers migrating out of the yarn and tangling into balls under friction.

Every yarn is made of individual fibers twisted together. When a fiber is short, more of its ends sit at the yarn surface, and friction works those ends loose until they tangle with each other into the small balls we call pills.

Staple length is therefore the first predictor. Long-staple fiber has fewer ends per length of yarn, so there is simply less available to work loose. Grade A cashmere uses fibers around 34 to 36 millimeters; cheap cashmere uses fibers under 30, and that difference alone accounts for most of the variation people notice between cashmere garments.

Twist is the second. A tightly twisted yarn holds its fibers in mechanically; a loosely twisted one lets them migrate. This is why a soft, airy, fluffy sweater almost always pills — that softness is created by low twist, and low twist is exactly what allows pilling.

The uncomfortable trade-off: the softest sweater in the shop is usually the one that will pill fastest. Softness at the point of purchase and durability are frequently opposed, and shops sell on the first one.

Blends complicate it. Mixing fibers with different lengths and strengths — wool with acrylic or nylon — can either help or hurt. A small percentage of strong nylon reduces pilling; a large percentage of cheap acrylic increases it because the acrylic fibers are strong enough to hold the pills on rather than letting them fall away.

What are the two tests I can do in a shop?

Test one: the rub test. Take a section of the fabric — the underarm or an inside seam area if you are being polite — and rub it firmly between your palms for about fifteen seconds.

If a visible fuzz or a small pill appears, it will pill in wear, and quickly. If the surface stays smooth, it is a well-made yarn. This test is remarkably accurate and takes almost no time.

Test two: the twist check. Look closely at the yarn at a seam or a cuff. A well-twisted yarn looks like a tiny rope with a visible spiral; a low-twist yarn looks fuzzy and indistinct. You can see this with the naked eye if you look for it.

A third, softer signal: the halo. Hold the sweater up against a window and look at the edge against the light. A visible fuzzy halo of loose fiber ends means short staple, low twist, or both.

And the density check while you are there: hold it to the light. Fabric you can see clearly through is loosely knit, and loose knit structures let fibers move more.

None of these are about price. A well-spun mid-priced lambswool will pass all four; an expensive fluffy cashmere may fail all four.

Myth: Expensive knitwear does not pill. Fact: Price signals brand more reliably than it signals staple length. Plenty of expensive cashmere is spun from short fibers and pills immediately, and plenty of mid-priced merino does not.

Myth: Pilling means the sweater is wearing out. Fact: Pilling is surface fiber migration, not structural damage. A pilling sweater can be structurally sound for years and simply needs de-pilling, though heavy pilling does indicate fiber loss over time.

Myth: Natural fibers pill less than synthetics. Fact: Natural fibers pill and then the pills fall off because the fibers are weak enough to break. Synthetic fibers are strong, so their pills stay attached — which is why acrylic looks worse for the same amount of pilling.

Myth: A sweater shaver is the solution. Fact: A shaver cuts fibers and thins the fabric a little each time. A cashmere comb or a sweater stone lifts the pills without cutting into the surface and is the better long-term tool.

Myth: Softness indicates quality. Fact: Softness at purchase often indicates surface treatment or low twist. Many good sweaters soften with wear and washing, and the ones that arrive maximally soft frequently go downhill from there.

How do I make the knitwear I own last?

Rotate rather than wear consecutively. Fibers need time to recover, and wearing the same sweater two days running roughly doubles the friction damage compared with alternating.

De-pill early and with a comb, not a shaver. Pills protect nothing and removing them early prevents them from growing and pulling more fiber out. Work in one direction, gently, and do the whole garment at once.

Wash less, and cool. Most knitwear needs washing every four to six wears at most. Air it between wears — hanging a sweater in fresh air overnight does most of what a wash does for odor without the abrasion.

Hand wash or use a proper wool cycle, and never tumble dry. Agitation is what drives fiber migration, and a tumble dryer is a machine for creating agitation.

Dry flat, always. Hanging a wet knit stretches the shoulders permanently under the weight of its own water.

Watch the friction points. Underarms, the side where a bag strap sits, and the front where a seatbelt crosses are where pilling starts. Moving a bag to the other shoulder occasionally makes a real difference over a season.

Fold, do not hang, for storage. Sustained hanging distorts shoulders, and a distorted shoulder is not fixable.

Is cashmere always better than merino?

No. Good merino outperforms poor cashmere on durability by a wide margin, and merino is generally more resilient in daily wear. Cashmere is warmer and softer for its weight, which is a different advantage.

Ply is how many strands are twisted together. Two-ply and above generally means a more stable, less pill-prone yarn than single-ply, and it is usually stated for better knitwear. Single-ply cashmere is soft and fragile.

Will a sweater stop pilling eventually?

Is a small percentage of nylon a bad sign?
